What is "favicon.ico"?

Internet Explorer version 5.0 has a new "feature", which allows a web designer to create an icon file. When a user bookmarks your web site in Internet Explorer, this icon becomes the icon in the user's Favorites menu.

You can create an icon file using any icon editor. One such editor is called MicroAngelo. Once you have created an icon file, save it as "favicon.ico" and upload it to your root directory (eg. www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico). Now, when an IE5 user bookmarks your site, this icon will appear in the user's Favorites menu, to help identify your web site.

If you do not have a favicon.ico file on your site, you will find a 404 (File Not Found) error whenever an IE5 user bookmarks your site, because it cannot find the file.
